Please read the article until the end and watch the YouTube video below, and you will learn not only the best tips when applying for a german student visa but also all the critical details you need on how to avoid a visa rejection as an international student and apply successfully and get a student visa and study in Germany.

How to Apply for a Student Visa for Germany?

Applicants for German student visas should submit their applications as early as possible and at least three months before they plan to move to Germany. To accomplish this, you should contact your local German consulate or embassy.

In general, you need the following documents (see the list below):

Studentisches Visum für Deutschland Schengener Staaten

  • Completed application form

  • Valid passport
Visa applications should be submitted with a passport valid for at least another year at the time. Additionally, passports should have at least two blank pages.

  • Two photographs

  • Proof of admittance to the study course or preparatory college (original and two copies)

  • Transcript of academic records

  • Certificate of German language
Proof of your German language proficiency or evidence that you intend to attend a language course in Germany (if studying in German)

  • Financial Resources
Demonstrate that you have the financial resources to support yourself during your stay in Germany (currently €8,700 per year)
Depositing a security payment into a blocked bank account is one of the ways of proving that you have the money to study in Germany – this means that the money cannot be withdrawn until you are in Germany.

  • Proof of valid health insurance coverage (minimum coverage of EUR 30,000)

We recommend the affordable tariffs from the Hanse Merkur Insurance group in Hamburg starting at only EUR 28.00 per month. It is one of the largest insurance companies in Germany, focusing on international students in Germany. The student tariff starts at only EUR 28.00 per month.

This insurance accomplishes the German Embassy's and Foreigners' Department's (Ausländerbehörde) visa requirements. After your online application, you will receive by email any necessary documents very soon, usually within a few minutes. The documents can be printed at your home and immediately used for your visa application at the Embassy or Foreigners' Department.

  • Statement of the authenticity of documents submitted

  • Proof of no criminal records
Depending on the embassy, you may also need to submit proof that you have no criminal records.

Student Visa in Germany vs. Schengen Visa

If you plan to study in Germany longer than 90 days, you should apply for a National Student Visa rather than a Schengen Visa. A Schengen Visa gives you only three months' stay in Germany.

What are the types of German Student Visas?

German student visas fall into three categories:

1. Student Visa (Visum zu Studienzwecken)

A student visa is meant for those who have already secured an admission letter (Zulassungsbescheinigung) from one of the German universities for a long-term course. The initial visa is usually stamped for 3 or 6 months, depending on your embassy/consulate and university. Keep in mind that it is only considered as your entry visa to Germany. After sorting out all the necessary paperwork, you will have to get it renewed before the expiration date at the Immigration Office of your city.

The visa extension is generally for a period of 2 years. For visa extension, you will need the following documents:

your enrollment certificate (Studienbescheinigung) from your University or Hochschule

health insurance with sufficient coverage (Krankenversicherung)

proof of financial sustenance in order to get the extension.

2. Language Course Visa (Visum für einen Sprachkurs oder Sprachkurs-Visum)

Language course visa, as the name suggests, is for those who want to pursue a language course in Germany. You must have an acceptance letter from one of the language schools before applying for this visa. The duration of visa validity depends on the length of the course. Generally, it is for three months and can go up to one year at the most.

Please note that your language visa cannot be extended for more than the granted period. It cannot be converted into a student visa as well. If you plan to pursue a degree course after the language course, you will have to return to your own country and apply for a student visa.

3. Student Application Visa (Studienbewerbervisum / Visum zur Studienbewerbung)

The third type of visa applies to those who are yet to be accepted by an institution and those who have to take up a final test in order to get into a university in Germany. They are allowed to stay for a period of 3 months to complete the enrollment at their German University or Hochschule

Another group of people who come under this section are those who have to do a foundation course for a year at a German Studienkolleg before attending university or Hochschule in Germany. The student must pass an entrance exam (Feststellungsprüfung) to qualify for further studies then. This is the case when your school-leaving diploma from your home country is not considered sufficient enough for higher studies in Germany.

Applying for a German visa: The Best 4 Tips for Visa Application

Book an appointment early enough at your nearest consulate.

The recommended application period is 3 months before your intended date of travel.

It takes somewhere between 4 and 6 weeks for visa approval.

Applying a bit early gives you a scope to retry if your application is rejected for some reason.

How to avoid a German Visa Rejection?

A German embassy is not solely responsible for issuing or denying a visa, as it is in other consulates. Instead, it depends primarily on the Immigration Office. Visa officials only provide feedback based on your performance at the visa interview. This means that you can do well during the interview but still don't get a German student visa. On the other hand, you may perform poorly at the interview and be surprised to find out that you have been granted a visa.

What are the Reasons for Rejection of German Student Visa?

Your visa application may be rejected for a variety of reasons. Below is a list of some of them.

1. Incorrect Visa Application

2. Financial Instability

3. Unsatisfactory Academic Record

4. Insufficient Language Skills (German or English)

5. Inconsistent Choice of Study Programs

6. Lack of Preparation of Your Interview
